The Cathedral Chapter’s tasks include the church service, pastoral cure, proclamation of the Word of God and to administer sacraments, i.e. the liturgy in Aachen Cathedral. Furthermore the Cathedral Chapter is responsible for the preservation of the Cathedral, elects the new bishop and part of the administration of the diocese. The Prussian-Concordat in 1929 defined the number of members of the chapter and the number of cathedral vicars. Therefore the Aachen Cathedral Chapter is made up of the cathedral provost, six resident member, four non-resident members of the chapter and six cathedral vicars. A non-resident member of the chapter is not tied to a specific location (here Aachen Cathedral) and not obliged to permanently serve at Aachen Cathedral, but during an election process he still retains the same rights as a resident member.
The Provost of Aachen Cathedral is chairman and speaker of the chapter. He is the chapter’s representative to the public, responsible for the implementation of the chapter’s resolutions and the day to day business.
